Friday, December 7, 2012 at 1:57PM It is now a three horse race for the title, there is a few different scenarios that can play out. Here they are;
If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title, only if Slater finishes 5th or worse.
If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title, only if Slater finishes 5th or worse.
If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.
If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.
So that's the breakdown, whether or not you believe consistency is the main determinate of a world title or actual tour wins, the Pipeline contest will be one of the best in recent memory. With the way the draw will work, Parko will be on one side of the draw with Mick, Kelly on the other with John John. There is potential for some crucial match ups.

Parko's fans are hoping for scenes like this to end the 2012 ASP World Tour
The second last contest of the 2012 ASP World Tour, the O'Neill Cold Water Classic at Santa Cruz, gets underway on 1st November. Joel Parkinson leads the ratings, with Slater, Fanning and JJ Florence hot on his heels.
The big question for the legion of Parko fans out there is Can He Do It? They have seen him come so close to a well deserved World Title over the years, only to be thwarted by injury or close results.
Somehow, this time around things seem different for the most stylish surfer on the tour. Although he hasnt won an event this year, he has been Mr Consistency. This, combined with incredible fitness and a more relaxed demeanour, puts him in the box seat.
And with the forthcoming O'Neill event staged at a right hand pointbreak (Steamer Lane), followed by the season ender at Pipeline, it doesn't get much better than this for Parko....and his many fans.
